Mango stage by stage
A mango tree is a long-term asset, and most problems build up over years. Growers bring us the same list: trees in decline, weak new growth, a good year followed by a poor one, flowers and fruit dropping, and small fruit.
Main growing areas: Gujarat, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka and across India.
After harvest
MonsoonPruning, cleaning and feeding the tree. New growth (flush) after harvest is next season's fruiting wood.
Before flowering
Autumn and early winterThe tree needs mature shoots and stored food to flower well. Heavy late flush or stress now reduces flowering.
Flowering and fruit set
Winter to early springWeather, pests and the tree's reserves decide how many fruits set. Some drop is natural; heavy drop is not.
Fruit growth
Spring to summerFruit size and quality need steady water and nutrition. Stress now causes late drop and small fruit.

Mango questions
Why do my mango trees bear fruit only every other year?
After a heavy crop the tree has little stored food left, so it flowers poorly the next year. Good care after harvest, steady nutrition and the right pruning help even out bearing.
Why are my mango fruits dropping?
Some early drop is natural. Heavy drop follows stress: dry soil, hot winds, pests like hoppers, or a tree low on reserves.
